Certifique-se sempre de ler os prefácios e introduções aos livros de Nozick. São fascinantes.

Nozick é mais esperto que você. Se você e ele estivessem em um debate sobre alguma coisa (qualquer coisa), ele provavelmente venceria (ele seria capaz de vencer o seu argumento, mesmo que você estivesse certo e ele errado). “exploração filosófica de questões, muitas delas fascinantes em si e por si mesmas, que surgem e se interligam quando estudamos direitos individuais e o Estado. A palavra ‘exploração’ foi escolhida de propósito. Uma das opiniões sobre a maneira de escrever um livro de filosofia sustenta que o autor deve pensar minuciosamente em todos os detalhes da visão que apresenta e em seus problemas, polindo e refinando sua tese de modo a apresentá-la ao mundo como um todo acabado, completo e elegante. Não penso assim. De qualquer forma, acredito que há lugar e função em nossa vida intelectual diária para um trabalho menos completo, contendo apresentações inacabadas, conjecturas, questões e problemas em aberto, indicações, conexões secundárias, bem como uma linha principal do argumento. Há espaço para palavras sobre assuntos que não sejam as últimas palavras.” (p. 13, ênfase minha).

Nozick fica perplexo com o porquê de outros filósofos não escreverem da forma como ele escreve. Eles escrevem como se acreditassem que tem a “palavra absolutamente final sobre o assunto”, mesmo que obviamente saibam – e na maioria das vezes prontamente admitam – que não tem. Escrevem como se tivessem finalmente “descoberto a verdade e em torno dela construíram uma fortaleza inexpugnável”, mesmo que obviamente saibam – e na maioria das vezes prontamente admitam – que não encontraram. (p. 13) Até mesmo os filósofos mais importantes – com a exceção de uns poucos excêntricos – estão cientes de seus pontos frágeis, suposições não comprovadas, conexões frouxas, e falhas em suas visões.

Nozick prossegue dizendo que uma das formas da atividade filosófica “lembra empurrar e comprimir coisas para caber em algum perímetro fixo de forma específica”. (p. 13) Filósofos querem construir e defender um ponto de vista. Mas frequentemente isso significa apertar, esmagar e manipular a verdade para que ela se encaixe no formato do ponto de vista do filósofo. Perceba que Nozick não está acusando os filósofos de desonestidade intelectual, nem ele pensa que esse problema é endêmico apenas para filósofos. Como diz David Schmidtz nas páginas de abertura de um de seus livros, teorias são como mapas. São como representações 2D de domínios 3D. Todas as teorias úteis – como todos os mapas úteis – envolvem algum grau de distorção, omissão, simplificação e deturpação.

Nozick diz:

“Nenhum filósofo diz: ‘Foi aqui que comecei, foi ali onde acabei.’ A grande fraqueza em minha obra é que parti de lá para aqui. Em particular, aqui estão as mais notáveis distorções, empurrões, cutucatas, pauladas, extrações, estiramentos e cortes que cometi durante a viagem, para nada dizer das coisas jogadas fora e ignoradas e de todas as ocasiões em que me recusei a olhar.”

Nozick se manifesta de forma incomum ao dizer todas essas coisas. Várias vezes, na parte mais importante do texto, e frequentemente nas notas de rodapé, Nozick vai chamar sua atenção para o que ele considera serem os pontos mais fracos, não comprovados e difíceis. Ele não está procurando ganhar – está procurando fazer uma boa filosofia. Ele escreve dessa forma porque acha que esse é um modelo apropriado para a filosofia. Construa a melhor hipótese que puder para algo, mas não finja que construiu um edifício mais forte do que o que você realmente construiu. Confie em seus leitores para que se empenhem com você de uma forma filosófica. (Nozick era muito confiável, então.)

A maioria das pessoas – incluindo a maioria dos libertários – são ideólogos caricatos, que têm mais confiança em suas crenças políticas do que evidência e argumentos disponíveis para sustentá-las, e nutrem um desdém maior do que deveriam pelas crenças dos outros. Nozick, quaisquer que sejam seus defeitos, não era um ideólogo caricato.
